Experience:
Steve Smith Designs was created by professional landscape designer and business man Steve Smith. With over 25 years of experience with Landscape Design and Sales, Steve has worked with countless clients encompassing numerous facets of residential and commercial landscape design.
Most recently, Steve worked as the multi-family and custom residential division manager for one of the largest landscape company in the state of Colorado,
Steve also worked for an environmental restoration company and was involved in several state and federally funded Mine Reclamation Acts Projects in the state of Colorado.
He was the Director of Landscape for PGA National Golf Resort and worked for PGA of America as Head of the Maintenance Crews of the Golf Resort. While working for the PGA of America he was involved in the redesign of the PGA Senior Championship Course originally designed by Jack Nicklaus.
Prior to starting his current company, Steve Smith Designs, Steve was the owner of his own corporation in Palm Beach, Florida for ten years. His specialized in estate landscape renovation and design. To his business he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience .
In addition to his many accolades, Steve has been published in architectural magazines and garden books pertaining predominately to the Palm Beach area.
Design Background:
Steve specializes in estate renovation and theme gardens. He has worked on multiple projects encompassing a large variety of garden styles.
Extensive travel through Europe has given Steve a true sense of French, Italian and English garden designs. Also working in the environmental restoration industry in Colorado, Steve has developed a very naturalistic style of design.

Our staff of professionally trained individuals is here to identify your landscape needs and develop a plan for implementation. Steve Smith Designs is a full service design/build and landscape design company. From the initial phone call, through installation and a final walk through, our exceptionally skilled staff is here to provide you the highest quality professional landscape installation available in the area.
Site Consultation - Contact us via phone or e-mail to begin the process of determining your landscape needs. Once your general needs
are established an appointment for a site consultation will be set with our landscape designer to meet with you at your property. During the
site consultation we will discuss in detail how you want to use your outdoor space. If it is determined a comprehensive design is needed, a
design fee will be assessed for the specific area(s) of interest. Design fees are based on the size of your project and the amount of detail required for the design development.
Design Process - We will begin by measuring the site and taking notes. A design will be developed to include existing features and will incorporate the concepts discussed during the site consultation.
Bid/Contract - Once the design is complete, we will send you a bid for the work for you to review. A contract will be included that proposes the installation cost of your project. The bid can be broken into predetermined phases based on your established budget for the project.
Installation -After your contract has been signed. Your project will be passed onto our highly skilled landscape design build crews.
We will oversee the craftsmanship and attention to detail that you expect from a professional installation. Our crew is here to provide
you the highest quality installation of planting beds, stone walks, walls, patios and more.
Review - Upon the completion of your installation your designer will be here to review the various components of your project
should need be. We guarantee all of our work. Trees, shrubs, one gallon perennials are guaranteed for one year for a one
time replacement. During the review of your project, we will walk you through the proper plant care. Steve Smith
Designs also offers seasonal cleanup and pruning services to help maintain the integrity of your investment.
fertilization services
Fertilization is the main factor in having a healthy lawn. A Denver lawn should be fertilized, at a bare minimum, once a year.
We suggest two times a year. The first application should be applied early spring. This helps new growth get a kick start. The second application should be applied in the beginning or mid June. This application contains nitrogen and corn glutton. The nitrogen is what helps
make a green yard green and the corn glutton acts like a barrier to help prevent broad leaf weeds, such as dandelions, germinate.
Weeds that are caught early, before they have gone to seed are unable to spread throughout your lawn. This give you a better chance
of having a weed free lawn.
If you like we can do a third application sometime in late Sept early Oct, possibly when
you have your sprinkler system blown out. This application is a winterizer that helps
prepare the lawn for the long cold months ahead, reducing the amount of winter kill.

We offer professional sprinkler system winterization by trained professionals that care about the safety of your system. We are trained to handle all types of sprinkler systems and can ensure that your system will be winterized properly to avoid expensive repairs.
Question: When should I have my sprinkler system blown out?
Answer: It is important to have your sprinkler system blown out prior to the first freeze. Unfortunately, we cannot determine when that is going to be so we recommend having them winterized starting the second week in October. However, weather varies from year to year and it is often times best to keep an hear out to make sure that if a freeze is coming and the system is not blown out yet that you at least drain the line prior to the freeze.
Question: By having my sprinkler system blown out does that ensure that I will not have any damage over the winter?
Answer: Not always, even a properly winterized system can still have damage. Some winter damage is completely unrelated to the winterization of the system. Plastic sprinkler parts can become frail and break in extremely cold conditions.
Question: Do I need to be home for you to perform the blowout?
Answer: If you want us to drain the downstairs pipe and shut off the water you do need to be home or give us access to the property via lock box or other means. If you can shut off the water inside the house and drain the downstairs pipe yourself then we can winterize the system from the outside and you will not need to be home. Question: I am trying to self drain my system but I cannot find my water shutoff in the basement, what now?
Answer: Feel free to give us a call and we maybe able to help you locate the shutoff or if you prefer we would be happy come and shutoff the water and drain the system.
Question: I am draining my downstairs pipe and it is taking a long time to drain, did I do it properly?
Answer: Yes, if you did not shut it off properly you will have water gushing out of the pipe. I could take 5-10 minutes for the pipe to drain completely. Some pipes are very long.
Question: I am trying to drain my downstairs pipe but no water is coming out, am I doing this correctly?
Answer: Most likely not. You will need air flow for the water to release. You will need to go outside to the vacuum breaker and open a petcock to get proper airflow. Please click on the icon at the bottom of this page to download proper instructions for draining your system.
Question: Why do we need to drain the pipe?
Answer: If you donÂ’t drain the pipe then it is possible that the water that is inside the pipe on the outside of the building will freeze and break the pipe.
Question: Why canÂ’t you drain the pipe for me?
Answer: We are more than happy to drain the pipe for you. However, if you can drain your own pipe you do not need to be home for us to be able to blowout the sprinkler system. If you prefer we are happy to complete the draining of the pipe for you.
Question: How do you blowout the sprinklers if you cannot get into to use the sprinkler clock?
Answer: We will operate each zone through the valve boxes which are the boxes in the ground.
Question: I did not have my system drained and it froze and I need some repairs can you do that?
Answer: Yes, typically we can make any repairs that you might need done to your system. Please feel free to contact us and we would be a happy to access the damage and give you a free estimate of the cost of repairs.
Question: When should I have my sprinkler system start up done?
Answer: We recommend that you startup your sprinkler system when hard freezes are unlikely. This is usually in May. You will need to have your system running once the weather turns warmer to prevent any damage to your turf.

The cold Denver winters can be hard on your lawn. Once spring rolls around, you want to get your lawn back up on its feet and get ready for our wonderful Colorado summers. Furthermore, in fall, you will want to get those leaves up off the ground before it starts snowing. Steve Smith Designs offers both fall and spring clean-up and shrub and tree pruning. We know that most people find this to be a very tedious chore that they would prefer not to deal with.
